The pangolin is one of the most fascinating animals in the world. Despite its scaly armor and docile nature, the pangolin is the most trafficked animal in the world, with its scales and meat being highly sought after in parts of Asia and Africa. Today, we'll explore the habits and adaptations of this amazing animal, as well as the threats it faces due to habitat destruction and poaching.

Physical Characteristics
The pangolin is an animal covered in scales, which makes it look like a reptile, but it is actually a mammal. The pangolin can grow up to 3 feet in length and can weigh up to 70 pounds. Its body is elongated and cylindrical, with a long tail and small head. The pangolin's scales are made of keratin, the same material that makes up human hair and nails, and are used to protect the animal from predators.
Habits and Adaptations
Pangolins are nocturnal animals and spend most of their time alone. They are primarily insectivores, feeding on ants and termites, which they locate using their keen sense of smell. Pangolins have a long, sticky tongue that can be up to 16 inches long, which they use to extract insects from nests. When threatened, pangolins will curl up into a ball, using their scales as armor to protect themselves.
However, the pangolin's unique adaptations have not been enough to protect them from the dangers of poaching and habitat destruction. Pangolins are being hunted for their scales, which are believed to have medicinal properties in some Asian countries.
Additionally, pangolins are being sold as exotic pets, further contributing to their decline.
Conservation Efforts
There are numerous efforts underway to protect the pangolin from extinction. International trade in pangolins and their products was banned in 2016 under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), which has helped reduce demand for the animal. Additionally, conservation organizations are working to raise awareness about the pangolin and the importance of protecting it. Many countries are also taking steps to protect the animal by increasing penalties for poaching and illegal trade.
The pangolin is a remarkable animal that has been forced to adapt to the challenges of living in a rapidly changing world. While the pangolin faces numerous threats, there are efforts underway to protect the species and its habitat. As more people become aware of the importance of conservation, we can hope to ensure the survival of the pangolin for future generations.
